Our Story
Welcome to Prairie Moon Winery and Vineyards. Located in Ames, Iowa, we started with a passion for fine wine and a need for expansion in Iowa’s agricultural diversity.
In 2000, Steven Nissen planted the first vines of what now has become a thirteen acre vineyard. The dream of Prairie Moon is to grow high quality grapes to create fine estate wines in the Midwest. With the unique growing season and agricultural environment, we believe our products reflect the ideal native Iowan wine.
Among the acreage, there are many grape varieties. The luscious rows host hybrid and native American grapes that provide beautiful tastes to the palate.

Holly’s love for wine and community sparked Prairie Moon nearly 18 years ago. Under Holly’s leadership and appreciation for her staff, Prairie Moon has expanded into hosting weddings, private events, community events and a full-operating winery.
Matt Nissen
Winery Operations
Matt is our go-to for anything related to winery operations. Matt has been our wine maker and involved in distributing Prairie Moon wines around central Iowa.
Nicole Eaton
Event & Staff Manager
Nicole is one of the top employees at the winery. She manages our staff, helps with the scheduling, and is taking on the role of event coordinator and more. Her warm personality and can-do attitude will fulfill all your event and needs for the Moon!.
